This is my public notebook for keeping track of my reading on the three competing forces at play: the offer of innovative products for virtual experimentation (mostly Generative AI these days with other types as well), the regulatory activity around this innovation, and the changes in the behaviour of R&D professionals as they go about their daily business. Innovation, regulation and adoption - the latter being the final word on the validity of the first and the efficacy of the second component.

AI-based products work alongside humans in the R&D loop.

"...AI could reach greater heights of intelligence by forgoing consciousness altogether. Conscious processes like holding something in short-term memory are pretty limited—we can only pay attention to a couple of things at a time and often struggle to do simple tasks like remembering a phone number long enough to call it. It’s not immediately obvious what an AI would gain from consciousness, especially considering the impressive feats such systems have been able to achieve without it".

Will AI regulation force the genie back in the bottle?

To determine whether a global consensus exists regarding the ethical principles that should govern AI applications and to contribute to the formation of future regulations, this paper conducts a meta-analysis of 200 governance policies and ethical guidelines for AI usage published by public bodies, academic institutions, private companies, and civil society organizations worldwide.

According to the AI execs at Meta, "while talking about existential risk is a signal that tech people are aware of AI risks, tech doomers have a bigger ulterior motive: influencing the laws that govern tech." And Meta wants in on the big game, so it needs to keep the regulatory doors wide open. To achieve it, it warns against the dangers of giving all the control over AI to a handful of companies on the West Coast of the US and banks on its open-source strategy.

Running up against the physics of the real world. Meanwhile, R&D experts and other humans ...
